Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission contains two documents: Affiliation letter and Manuscript without affiliations
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 10-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Aims & scope

Acta horticulturae et regiotecturae (AHR) is a peer reviewed, open access, scholarly journal aimed at presenting and disseminating the latest, up-to-date results of scientific research in the fields of landscape engineering, landscape architecture and horticulture within the context of climatic changes and sustainable development. The journal focuses on the publication of original research exploring the ideas and challenges that are central to horticulture and viticulture, nature, environment and landscape protection, management, sustainability, and related fields.

Authors are fully responsible for the originality, scientific quality and formal correctness of their paper.

Our journal was first published in 1998.

The Journal is published for the Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (corporate author/editorial office  – Faculty of Horticulture and Landscape Engineering), on the De Gruyter  Sciendo platform.



We believe in the importance of open access and therefore no fees apply for publishing in Acta Horticulturae et Regiotecturae.

Peer review

The Journal applies a double-blind peer review process. Articles are reviewed by two independent reviewers who are not involved as a participant, supervisor, technical reviewer, or advisor in the work being reviewed.

All manuscripts are checked by  iThenticate software (Similarity Check service).



Paper/Manuscript Submit

Manuscripts should be submitted by one of the authors of the manuscript through the Open journal system .

The corresponding (submitting) author is responsible for managing all communication between the journal and all co-authors, before and after publication. Before publication, papers will be emailed to the corresponding author for proofreading. The author’s response, with or without corrections, should be sent as soon as possible. Compliance with these instructions is obligatory for all authors.


Types of published papers

Acta Horticulturae et Regiotecturae publishes peer-reviewed papers. All papers are published in English.

  • Peer-reviewed papers
    • Scientific Papers,
    • Short Communications,
    • Review Papers.

Scientific Papers

Scientific Papers should fully and clearly state the main goals, applied methods and procedures and obtained results of an original research or original solution. Scientific papers are limited to max. 10 pages or 18 000 characters. Manuscripts should be divided into the following sections (required order):

  • Title;
  • Full authors(s) name(s);
  • Affiliations;
  • Abstract (max 250 words, 1 paragraph);
  • Keywords (3-5);
  • Introduction;
  • Material and Methods;
  • Results and Discussion; Conclusions;
  • References;
  • Optional section: Acknowledgements.

Short Communications

A shorter paper aiming to provide readers with useful and novel results or information, should report new data/results that should be communicated to the scientific community prior to the completion of the full investigation. Articles focusing on original research, proposal of a new theory or concept based on existing research, new models, hypotheses, innovative methods etc. This article type includes, but is not limited to discovery or development of new solutions, novelty in theory, novelty in simulation and modeling. Short Communications are limited to 3 pages or 5 400 characters include figures or tables. Manuscripts should be divided into the following sections (required order):

  • Title;
  • Full authors(s) name(s);
  • Affiliations;
  • Abstract (max 150 words, 1 paragraph);
  • Keywords (3-5);
  • Material and Methods;
  • Results and Discussion;
  • References (max. 15);
  • Corresponding author contact information.
  • Optional section: Acknowledgements.


Review Articles

Up-to-date articles that aim to provide overview of a particular field or specific aspects of the journal topics concerned. Length: 3 pages or 5 400 characters. Manuscripts should be divided into the following sections (required order):

  • Title;
  • Full authors(s) name(s);
  • Affiliations;
  • Main text;
  • Corresponding author contact information.


Formal requirements for manuscript set up

  • IMRAD structure
  • English language with correct scholarly British spelling
  • File format: DOC, DOCX, ODF
  • Page format: A4 size, orientation – portrait
  • Font: Times New Roman, Font size: 12
  • Lice spacing: single-line spacing (before: 0 p, after: 0 p)
  • Margins: 2.5 cm (left/right/top/bottom)
  • Alignment justified (align the text to both the left and right margins) for body/main text; left alignment for illustrations (figures and tables) and their legends & footnotes
  • All illustrations, figures (photographs, graphs or diagrams) and tables should be cited in the
  • Citations: in-text citation by APA Style (source reference in parentheses directly in text – author’s last name along with the publication date and/or the page number)
  • References: list of sources in alphabetical order by APA Style
